August 2026 promises to be a remarkable month at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS), bringing together leading scholars, diplomats, policymakers, students, researchers, and members of the public for a series of intellectually stimulating events that explore the most pressing issues shaping Sri Lanka, the Indian Ocean region, and the wider global order.
From landmark publication launches and distinguished orations to public lectures, film screenings, cultural engagements, and alumni events, the BCIS August calendar reflects our continued commitment to fostering informed dialogue, critical thinking, and meaningful public engagement.
This month’s programme features the launch of the BCIS publication Winds and Waves: Geopolitical Currents in the Indian Ocean since 1945, presented by Professor Gamini Keerawella, offering fresh insights into the evolving strategic dynamics of the Indian Ocean. We are also honoured to host the Professor Shelton U. Kodikara Oration 2026, delivered by renowned scholar Professor Amitav Acharya, in collaboration with the Regional Centre for Strategic Studies (RCSS).
Further enriching the programme is a compelling Public Talk by Professor Antony Anghie, focusing on Investment Law and Environmental Protection: Some Lessons for Sri Lanka, an important discussion at the intersection of international law, sustainable development, and national policy.
BCIS also continues its popular Politics & Popcorn series with special film screenings, including Sharni Jayawardena’s acclaimed documentary “Ek Awasthawak” (එක අවස්ථාවක්) and an Iranian Film Screening, creating space for thoughtful conversations on politics, society, identity, and culture through the power of cinema.
The month also includes the BMICH Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the 5th NAM Heads of State Summit (1976), celebrating a defining moment in Sri Lanka’s diplomatic history and the legacy of the Non-Aligned Movement. We conclude the month’s featured events with the BCIS Alumni NAM Quiz Night, strengthening connections across our academic and professional community.
