Discussion on “International People’s Tribunal on the World Bank & IMF”
Friday, March 21, 2025 | from 12.30 p.m. – 1.00 p.m. | Classroom 7-101 | BCIS
The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have been active in South Asia for over 70 years. The policies implemented by these institutions through various loans have permanently transformed national economies. As a result, debt distress is a common issue in many South Asian countries.
In response to these challenges, smallholder farmers, fishers, women, Indigenous people, and those affected by climate change disasters from five South Asian countries and Indonesia came together to establish the International People’s Tribunal on the World Bank and the IMF in Kathmandu. They aim to hold the IMF and World Bank accountable for their actions.
Amali Wedagedara, Senior Researcher at BCIS, participated in the tribunal as a juror. She will speak about the proceedings and the ways and means of adopting the practice of tribunal to interrogate the involvement and outcomes of the IMF and World Bank programs in Sri Lanka.
